Toronto, Canada - A recent report has revealed a startling trend in Toronto: a significant surge in the number of newcomers relying on food banks. According to a joint study by Daily Bread and North York Harvest, four out of five new food bank users in the past year have been immigrants to Canada within the last five years.
The report, titled "Who's Hungry in 2024?", found that between April 1, 2023, and March 31, 2024, the number of new food bank users in Toronto skyrocketed by 222% to 154,700 individuals. This surge is largely attributed to the influx of immigrants seeking a better life in Canada.
Furthermore, a separate report by Food Banks Canada revealed that 32% of food bank users nationwide have been in the country for less than a decade. This data aligns with Canada's growing reliance on immigration to fuel population growth.
The increasing reliance on food banks among newcomers highlights the challenges faced by many immigrants as they settle into their new lives. Economic factors such as the high cost of living and housing, coupled with the difficulties of social integration and economic stabilization, contribute to food insecurity among this population.
These findings underscore the urgent need for increased support and resources for newcomers in Canada. As the country continues to welcome immigrants, it is crucial to address the underlying factors contributing to food insecurity and ensure that all residents have access to affordable and nutritious food.
