Boeun, South Korea – A new expressway is set to revolutionize transportation in South Korea's central region. The Yeongdong-Ochang Expressway, a 63.9-kilometer, four-lane highway, is scheduled to begin construction in 2027 and be completed by 2031.
The new road will connect Yeongdong and Ochang, passing through Boeun County. It is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Jincheon and Yeongdong by approximately 20 minutes. The project is part of the government's plan to improve the country's transportation infrastructure and stimulate economic growth in the region.
The expressway is being funded through a public-private partnership, with the construction cost estimated at 1.6 trillion won. The project is expected to create new jobs and boost the local economy, particularly in Boeun County, where the highway will pass through several towns.
To accommodate the increased traffic, the expressway will include one rest area and three roadside rest stops. Additionally, several interchanges will be constructed, including one at Boeun-eup, which will connect to the Cheongju-Sangju Expressway.
"The new expressway will alleviate traffic congestion on National Route 19 and revitalize the local economy," said a spokesperson for Boeun County. "We expect to see a significant increase in economic activity in the region, particularly in the under-developed areas of Naebook-myeon."
The South Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is currently conducting a public review of the environmental impact assessment for the project. Residents can submit their comments until February 5th.
