Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo Unveils Ambitious Plans for 2025, Aiming to Complete a World-Class City

Daejeon, South Korea – Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo announced on September 6th the city’s achievements in 2024 and outlined its key plans for 2025, aiming to solidify Daejeon's position as a world-class city.
Mayor Lee highlighted the significant strides made in 2024, noting improvements in various quality-of-life indicators, including a surge in brand reputation, increased citizen satisfaction, and economic growth. These achievements, he said, were attributed to successful initiatives such as the 0si Festival, the development of the hydrogen tram for Subway Line 2, and the confirmation of routes for Subway Lines 3, 4, and 5.
Looking ahead to 2025, Mayor Lee emphasized four key areas: future, livelihood, space, and culture. For the future, the city plans to focus on strategic initiatives such as promoting the administrative integration of Daejeon and Chungnam, developing a bio-specialized cluster, and establishing a space technology innovation talent development center.
In terms of livelihood, the city will prioritize stabilizing the lives of small business owners and self-employed individuals, improving childcare and education, and supporting the elderly. The administration will also focus on creating a more vibrant cultural scene through various events and facilities.
For space, the city plans to expand its transportation infrastructure, including the construction of Subway Line 2 and the Chungcheong region's metropolitan railway. Additionally, the city will focus on environmental initiatives such as the development of the Bomunsan Arboretum and the creation of a national garden in Norubel.
To enhance the city's cultural appeal, Daejeon will invest in various cultural facilities, including a new cultural arts complex and a literature museum. The city will also strive to preserve historical sites and promote cultural tourism.
Mayor Lee expressed his determination to make Daejeon a city where everyone wants to live, emphasizing the importance of balancing economic growth with social welfare. He also highlighted the city's commitment to becoming a leading metropolitan city in the Chungcheong region.
