DAEJEON, SOUTH KOREA – Navigating the complexities of the tax system can be a daunting task for many individuals and small business owners. Recognizing this challenge, the Daejeon Metropolitan City government has proactively launched the "Visiting Village Tax Accountant" service, offering free, customized tax consultations directly to communities. In a recent initiative on April 3rd, Daejeon City partnered with the Daejeon Regional Tax Accountants Association to hold a special consultation event aimed at bolstering taxpayer rights and providing crucial guidance.

The event took place in Yongmun-dong, a district in Seo-gu, and specifically targeted residents of a large apartment complex and nearby small business operators. The primary goal was to offer accessible tax advice and raise awareness about the taxpayer rights protection system available to Daejeon citizens.

Attendees benefited from joint consultations covering both national and local taxes. Expert tax accountants addressed a wide range of concerns, with a particular focus on areas that directly impact daily life and financial well-being. These included tailored advice on income tax related to capital gains, inheritance and gift tax matters, and the often intricate regulations surrounding acquisition tax, including potential eligibility for various tax deductions and exemptions.

The "Visiting Village Tax Accountant" event is an extension of Daejeon's established "Village Tax Accountant" program, which was first introduced in 2016. This commendable initiative relies on the pro bono contributions of local certified tax accountants who volunteer their expertise to provide free tax counseling to residents. Currently, the program boasts 52 active tax accountants in its fifth term.

In a move to further enhance citizen empowerment and streamline access to support, Daejeon City has integrated the operations of the Village Tax Accountant program with the responsibilities of the Taxpayer Advocate's Office starting this year. This strategic alignment aims to strengthen the protection of citizens' rights and explore innovative ways to make tax consultation services even more readily available to those in need.

Lee Ok-seon, Head of Daejeon City's Legal Affairs and Statistics Division, emphasized the significance of the recent event, stating, "We are optimistic that this consultation service has provided new residents and small business owners with clarity on their tax obligations and has facilitated easier engagement with tax administration processes." She further affirmed the city's commitment to the program, adding, "Daejeon City will continue to actively support and expand the Village Tax Accountant system, as it provides invaluable practical assistance to our citizens."
