NEWARK, N.J. — The Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) New York Office, led by Regional Center Director Lee In-sook, partnered with United Airlines on September 4 to host a vibrant official welcoming ceremony at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) commemorating the launch of the only direct New York-area to Incheon route operated by a U.S. carrier.

Newark Liberty International Airport, located in New Jersey and serving as a vital gateway adjacent to Manhattan, stands alongside JFK and LaGuardia as one of the three major airports serving the New York metropolitan area. As a premier East Coast hub connecting over 200 destinations across 60 countries, EWR provides a strategic springboard for transpacific travel.

This milestone launch arrives amidst an unprecedented surge in American travelers discovering South Korea, fueled by the accelerating global wave of K-culture. Official tourism statistics underscore this robust trajectory: visitor arrivals from the United States reached approximately 1.4 million in 2025, marking an impressive 37% year-over-year increase. The momentum has carried strongly into the current year, with nearly 810,000 Americans visiting South Korea during the first half of 2026 alone, representing a 10.9% growth compared to the same period in 2025. This new connection directly addresses the rapidly expanding bilateral travel demand, strengthening the vital aviation bridge between the New York metropolitan area and Seoul.

To mark the inaugural departure, the KTO and United Airlines transformed the boarding gate into a cultural showcase, welcoming passengers bound for Seoul with an immersive array of traditional and contemporary Korean experiences. KTO’s official tourism mascots, Hojong and Mugomi, greeted travelers at the departure gate alongside a dynamic celebratory performance by the fusion gugak (traditional music) ensemble Jihwaza Band.

Passengers boarding the inaugural flight received curated K-beauty travel kits and comprehensive promotional brochures highlighting diverse travel destinations across South Korea. Adding a thoughtful touch of hospitality, traditional Korean patterned fans were placed on every seat in the aircraft cabin. Additionally, pre-flight interactive stations offered travelers a chance to sample traditional Korean refreshments, including sikhye (sweet rice punch) and yugwa (sweet crispy rice puffs), alongside a live Hangeul calligraphy experience where passengers received customized name cards written in the Korean alphabet.

Reflecting on the strategic significance of the new route, Lee In-sook, KTO Americas Regional Center Director, noted that this launch carries profound importance as the sole direct route linking the New York region to Korea operated by an American carrier. Moving forward, the KTO plans to maximize the potential of this strategic air corridor by launching targeted joint online marketing campaigns with United Airlines, organizing familiarization tours for influential U.S. travel trade partners, and accelerating the development of specialized, high-yield inbound tourism packages tailored to American travelers.

The strategic timing of this route introduction aligns with broader macroeconomic and aviation trends across the transpacific market. Industry analysts observe that enhanced competition and expanded seat capacity between North America and East Asia are driving down fare barriers while simultaneously increasing travel accessibility for leisure and corporate demographics alike. Furthermore, United Airlines has strategically reinforced its presence in the Asia-Pacific region, leveraging its expansive domestic U.S. network to feed connecting passengers smoothly through the Newark hub into Incheon International Airport—consistently ranked among the world's top transit hubs for operational efficiency and passenger experience.

Travel industry stakeholders and tourism boards anticipate that the enhanced connectivity will yield long-term mutual benefits, fostering deeper cultural exchanges and expanding economic cooperation between the United States and South Korea. As the KTO rolls out its comprehensive promotional roadmap for the remainder of the year, the Newark-Incheon route is poised to serve as a cornerstone for sustaining high-value tourist inflows, reinforcing South Korea’s status as a premier global destination for American travelers seeking a seamless blend of heritage and modernity.
