Dreams Won’t Bring Success. Action Will: How to Turn Wishes into Real Goals

This famous line, originally popularized by Brazilian author Paulo Coelho in his novel The Alchemist, has often been quoted to inspire dreamers. However, motivational speaker and self-development author Brian Tracy would likely shake his head at this sentiment. According to Tracy, wishing for success changes nothing. No matter how small or insignificant the first step may seem, his core message is simple: take action immediately.
Tracy’s philosophy stems from a recurring problem he observed: many people desperately claim they want to succeed, yet they refuse to take even the tiniest step forward, dismissing small actions as trivial or tedious. At times, their lack of action makes it hard to believe they genuinely want success at all.
The Power of Asking and Observing
Born in 1944 into an impoverished Canadian family who later immigrated to the United States, Tracy dropped out of high school with no special academic credentials or unique talents.
Growing up, his parents treated him as an ordinary child destined to struggle for a living. Absorbing this mindset, Tracy initially believed his intelligence, environment, and lack of education meant he was doomed to a difficult life. He drifted through various jobs—dishwashing, manual labor, farm work, and crewing on a cargo ship—accepting his fate without much question.
His perspective began to shift when he entered sales because it offered better pay. He worked harder than anyone else, yet his results remained mediocre. Wondering why his 100 times greater effort didn’t translate to better performance, he started asking questions, learning from top performers, and observing closely.
Wishes vs. Goals: Understanding the Difference
Gradually, Tracy’s focus shifted from mere sales techniques to the underlying habits of successful people. He realized that small, seemingly insignificant actions accumulate into positive habits, which eventually form routines that lead to success. After making a fortune in real estate development, he stepped away from business in the 1980s to become a full-time speaker, sharing his hard-earned insights.
In his book No Excuses! The Power of Self-Discipline (often reflected in his core teachings on action), Tracy emphasizes a strict distinction between a "wish" and a "goal." Hoping or talking about wanting to succeed is nothing more than a wish.
A goal, on the other hand, requires concrete action. For instance, deciding to wake up 30 minutes earlier to arrive at work ahead of schedule turns a vague aspiration into a real goal. People might scoff, calling such a small change insignificant. Yet, if you ask truly successful individuals about their secrets, they rarely point to a massive breakthrough. Instead, they credit a collection of small, everyday habits. There are no shortcuts.
