BioFriends Expands into Indonesian Clean Energy Market with Local Subsidiary and DME Plant Project

Seoul, South Korea – BioFriends Co., Ltd., a prominent climate technology innovator, has solidified its presence in the burgeoning Indonesian clean energy sector with the establishment of its local subsidiary, ‘BIO FRIENDS INDONESIA,’ in Jakarta on April 29th. This strategic move underscores the company's commitment to expanding its global footprint and leveraging its expertise in Dimethyl Ether (DME) and Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) technologies.
The establishment of the Indonesian subsidiary follows a significant technology export agreement secured at the ‘2024 Asia-Pacific DME Forum’ in October. BioFriends inked a deal with an Indonesian counterpart for the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) of a DME production plant. This initial project entails the construction of a 5,000-ton per annum DME production facility in Indonesia, envisioned as a pivotal manufacturing hub targeting the broader Southeast Asian market.
To ensure the long-term viability and efficiency of this venture, BioFriends has also entered into an Operation & Maintenance (O&M) contract for the plant. This comprehensive approach, encompassing both construction and operational management, highlights BioFriends' commitment to delivering a complete and sustainable solution. The company has further outlined plans for a second DME production plant in Indonesia, contingent on the successful operation of the first facility. The proposed locations for these plants are in the strategically important industrial regions of Cikande and Cilegon.
In a parallel development that further strengthens BioFriends' position in Indonesia's evolving energy landscape, the company announced on April 28th a Preliminary Feasibility Study (PFS) agreement with an Indonesian new energy and environmentally conscious enterprise. This collaboration will focus on exploring the development of a clean fuel plant incorporating Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) technology. This initiative signals BioFriends' proactive approach to addressing the environmental concerns associated with traditional fuel production methods.
Indonesia presents a compelling market for clean energy solutions. The nation heavily relies on imports for approximately 75% of its Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) consumption, creating a strong impetus for the adoption of alternative, domestically produced fuels. The Indonesian government has identified DME as a key strategic alternative and is actively promoting its use to enhance energy security. Current governmental plans include large-scale DME production projects utilizing coal gasification in resource-rich regions like Sumatra and Kalimantan, aiming to capitalize on the country's abundant low-rank coal reserves.
However, the reliance on coal gasification for DME production raises environmental concerns due to the potential for increased greenhouse gas emissions. This poses a challenge to Indonesia's ambitious Net-Zero emissions targets. Consequently, there is growing interest in cleaner technologies such as Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS), which offer a pathway to producing sustainable fuels while mitigating carbon emissions. CCUS involves capturing carbon dioxide emissions from industrial processes, preventing their release into the atmosphere, and then either utilizing the captured CO2 for various industrial applications or storing it safely underground.
The Indonesian DME market is poised for substantial growth, driven by supportive government policies and the pressing need for energy independence. However, to achieve sustained success in this dynamic market, companies must demonstrate technological superiority and a strong commitment to environmental sustainability. BioFriends' focus on integrating CCU technology into its clean fuel projects positions it favorably in this evolving landscape.
