INCHEON, South Korea – A fire broke out at the Club72 golf course near Incheon International Airport on Sunday evening, destroying over 100 golf carts.
The Incheon Fire Department reported that the blaze started around 8:07 p.m. in a storage facility for electric golf carts at the course, located in Unseo-dong, Jung-gu. Firefighters were able to contain the fire within an hour and 27 minutes, but the damage was extensive.
The fire, believed to have been caused by an electrical fault, completely destroyed two storage buildings and approximately 100 golf carts. Fortunately, there were no injuries as all employees had already left for the day.
"We received a report of a fire at the golf course and dispatched 121 firefighters and 41 pieces of equipment," said a spokesperson for the Incheon Fire Department. "The fire is believed to have originated in the golf cart storage area, and the golf course staff were able to conduct an initial firefighting effort before our arrival."
A spokesperson for Club72 golf course stated that the facility is aging and that the fire may have been caused by an electrical issue. The golf course has backup carts and is able to continue normal operations.
An official from Incheon International Airport Corporation suggested that the fire might have been caused by the charging of the golf cart batteries. "The golf cart storage facility is not required to have sprinklers, and the automatic fire detection system is believed to have functioned normally," the official said.
The Incheon Fire Department and police are currently investigating the exact cause of the fire and assessing the total damage.
