SEOUL – With just six days remaining until the deadline for overseas voter registration for South Korea’s 21st presidential election, the National Election Commission (NEC) reports a significant surge in applications. As of 5 PM on April 17th, the Korean Embassy in Japan leads with 9,632 registrations, highlighting the strong interest among overseas Koreans in participating in the upcoming election.
The NEC’s data reveals a concentrated interest in several key locations. Following Japan, the Consulate General in Shanghai recorded 5,563 registrations, while the Korean Embassy in Vietnam saw 5,203 applications. Other locations with high registration numbers include the Consulate General in Los Angeles (4,391), Vancouver (4,193), Frankfurt (4,024), and Ho Chi Minh City (3,975).
Globally, the total number of overseas voter registrations has reached approximately 134,000. By continental breakdown, Asia (including Oceania) accounts for the largest share with about 66,000 registrations, followed by the Americas (North and South America) with 34,000, and Europe (including Russia and the CIS) with 27,000.
The upcoming election, triggered by recent political developments, has spurred a robust voter registration campaign. Jung Kwang-il, co-representative of the Overseas Korean Voters' Solidarity, projects that the final registration count could reach 200,000 by the April 24th deadline. "The heightened political awareness and the condensed registration period have motivated many overseas Koreans to participate," Jung stated.
The NEC has implemented various measures to facilitate overseas voting, including online registration and mobile app support. These efforts aim to streamline the process and encourage participation. The electoral commission has also been working with overseas Korean communities to publicize the importance of voting and provide necessary information.
Historically, overseas voter participation has fluctuated. In the 2022 20th presidential election, approximately 231,000 overseas Koreans registered, while the 2017 election saw around 290,000 registrations. The current surge suggests a potentially high turnout for this election, reflecting the growing political engagement of the overseas Korean community.
The NEC emphasizes the importance of timely registration and encourages all eligible overseas Koreans to complete their applications before the deadline. Information on registration procedures and voting locations is available on the NEC website and through local Korean embassies and consulates. The commission is also conducting outreach programs to ensure that all eligible voters are informed about their rights and the voting process.
As the deadline approaches, both the NEC and overseas Korean organizations are intensifying their efforts to maximize voter participation, recognizing the crucial role of overseas Koreans in shaping the nation’s future.
