HARBIN, China – South Korea has emerged as a force to be reckoned with in figure skating, as Cha Jun-hwan and Kim Chae-yeon both clinched gold medals in the men's and women's singles events at the 2025 Harbin Asian Winter Games. This marks the first time in history that South Korea has won gold in both singles categories at the same Asian Winter Games.
Cha Jun-hwan, 24, overcame a previous ankle injury to deliver a flawless free skate program, earning a total score of 281.69. This victory is especially significant as it marks the first time a South Korean man has won a medal in the singles event at the Asian Games.
"I am very satisfied with my performance," said Cha Jun-hwan. "I didn't achieve my personal best score, but I am happy with the result." This win also grants Cha Jun-hwan exemption from military service, a significant honor in South Korea.
Kim Chae-yeon, 19, also achieved a historic win, securing the gold medal in the women's singles event with a total score of 219.44. She surpassed Japan's top contender, Kaori Sakamoto, who had led after the short program but faltered in the free skate. This is South Korea's first gold medal in women's singles in eight years.
"I didn't expect to win the gold medal," said Kim Chae-yeon. "I was just watching Sakamoto's performance, and I couldn't believe it when I found out I had won. I'm very happy."
Both Cha Jun-hwan and Kim Chae-yeon's victories are a testament to their hard work and dedication, and they have brought immense pride to South Korea. Their achievements are expected to elevate the sport's popularity in the country and inspire future generations of figure skaters.
