Helsinki, Finland – Finland will receive an additional €50 million from the European Commission to bolster its border security measures, particularly along its 1,340-kilometer eastern border with Russia. The funding, allocated through the EU Instrument for Financial Support for Border Management and Visa Policy (BMVI), aims to enhance surveillance capabilities and counter emerging hybrid threats and instrumentalised migration.
Prime Minister Petteri Orpo expressed gratitude for the additional funding, stating that it reflects Finland's effective collaboration with the European Commission. The total allocation to Finland under the current EU funding period now amounts to approximately €83 million.
Interior Minister Mari Rantanen outlined how the additional €50 million will be utilized: "The funds will be directed towards expanding technical surveillance coverage, improving situational awareness, and enhancing patrol mobility."
In October, Finland had already received €16 million in emergency funding to address the immediate costs associated with managing increased migration flows at the eastern border. The newly granted €50 million will support ongoing efforts to strengthen border security and mitigate future challenges.
