Seoul, South Korea – The Seoul Metropolitan Government has greenlighted the redevelopment of the aging Yeouido Sujung and Jinju Apartments into towering skyscrapers, as part of its ongoing urban renewal efforts.
The city’s Urban Planning Committee approved the redevelopment plans on December 4th, paving the way for a dramatic transformation of the two aging residential complexes. Both buildings, constructed in the 1970s, have reached the end of their lifespan and are in dire need of modernization.
The Sujung Apartment, originally built in 1976, will be redeveloped into a 49-story building with 498 units, including 61 affordable housing units. The Jinju Apartment, constructed a year later, will be even taller, reaching 57 stories with 578 units, including 88 affordable housing units.
Both projects will feature a mix of residential and commercial spaces, and will be designed to maximize natural light and ventilation. The new buildings will also include a variety of amenities, such as fitness centers, swimming pools, and community gardens.
"By redeveloping these aging apartments, we are not only improving the quality of life for residents but also creating a new landmark for Yeouido," said a spokesperson for the Seoul Metropolitan Government. "The new buildings will be more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly, and will help to revitalize the entire neighborhood."
To ensure that the redevelopment projects benefit the entire community, the city has included provisions for public facilities such as parks, green spaces, and community centers. Additionally, the developers will be required to contribute to the city's affordable housing fund.
The redevelopment of the Yeouido Sujung and Jinju Apartments is expected to take several years to complete. Once finished, the new buildings will be among the tallest in Seoul and will serve as a symbol of the city's ongoing transformation.
