Cairo, Egypt – A groundbreaking wind farm project is set to revolutionize Egypt's energy landscape, providing clean power to over 1.3 million households and bolstering the nation's ambitious renewable energy goals.
With a total cost of approximately $1.1 billion, the project has secured significant financial backing from international institutions, including a $200 million investment from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and a $170 million contribution from the African Development Bank (AfDB).
Construction is slated to commence in January 2025 and conclude in August 2027. Once operational, the 550 MW wind farm, divided into two sites, is expected to generate 4,111 GWh of clean energy annually. This substantial output will not only power millions of homes but also reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 1.71 million tons per year.
The Egyptian Cabinet has granted the project a prestigious Golden License, recognizing its strategic importance to the nation's energy future. This designation will expedite various approvals and facilitate the project's implementation, aligning with Egypt's commitment to achieving 42% renewable energy in its energy mix by 2030.
By embracing renewable energy sources like wind power, Egypt is taking significant strides towards a sustainable future. This project not only addresses the country's growing energy demands but also contributes to global efforts to mitigate climate change.
