Eindhoven, Netherlands – NXP Semiconductors has announced the launch of the industry's first wireless battery management system (BMS) solution featuring Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology. Scheduled for commercial availability in the second quarter of next year, this innovative solution is set to revolutionize the automotive industry.
The wireless BMS, part of NXP's FlexCom chipset, offers a number of advantages over traditional wired systems. By eliminating the need for extensive wiring, it simplifies vehicle assembly, reduces the risk of damage from impacts or short circuits, and enhances battery energy density.
The adoption of UWB technology for BMS is a significant industry first. While General Motors has already introduced wireless BMS in its vehicles, employing a 2.4GHz Personal Area Network (PAN) protocol developed by LG Innotek, NXP's UWB-based solution offers superior performance. UWB enables the transmission of larger amounts of data more accurately and without interference, making it ideal for applications that require high-precision and real-time data transfer.
"NXP's wireless BMS solution is the industry's first to adopt UWB technology, providing automotive manufacturers with cutting-edge technology to enable future electric vehicles," said Naomi Smit, vice president and general manager of the battery management systems business at NXP. "Trimension UWB offers simple, secure, and robust wireless communication within the BMS, delivering superior performance compared to traditional narrowband-based solutions. We are proud to partner with our customers to realize the wireless vision."
NXP's UWB wireless BMS solution is expected to play a crucial role in advancing electric vehicle technology by enabling more efficient and reliable battery management. With its ability to handle complex data and provide high-precision measurements, this solution can contribute to improving vehicle range, charging speed, and overall performance.
