Chungcheongnam-do (South Chungcheong Province) announced on the 26th that it will expand and supplement the support for the 'Chungnam-Style 1000 Won Breakfast' to promote the health of university students and mutual growth between the region and universities.
The Chungnam-Style 1000 Won Breakfast is a project where the province provides subsidies to participating universities so that they can offer breakfast to students for 1000 won.
This project is a separate initiative by the province, distinct from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs' (MAFRA) '1000 Won Breakfast' contest. It provides 1000 won per meal to universities within the province that purchase and use Chungnam rice, a local agricultural product, for breakfast.
The province has expanded the support this year from 'universities selected for the MAFRA 1000 Won Breakfast contest' to 'all universities within the province' and changed the execution criteria from 'number of times Chungnam agricultural products are used' to 'purchase of Chungnam rice' to support students' healthy eating habits, increase the consumption of Chungnam rice (a local agricultural product), and revitalize the local economy.
A total of 11 universities are participating this year among all universities in the province: Konyang University, Gongju National University of Education, Nazarene University, Namseoul University, Dankook University, Sangmyung University, Sun Moon University, Soonchunhyang University, Cheongwoon University, Korea University of Technology and Education, and Korea National University of Cultural Heritage. Students at participating universities can enjoy breakfast made primarily with Chungnam rice for 1000 won at their campus cafeterias.
In 2023, the first year of the MAFRA 1000 Won Breakfast contest project, 9 universities in the province provided 82,720 meals, and last year, 14 universities provided 151,549 meals.
This year, fueled by the increased awareness of the project and positive student response over the past two years, it is expected that over 250,000 meals will be sold at 11 universities.
A provincial official stated, "The Chungnam-Style 1000 Won Breakfast is a win-win project that simultaneously supports student health and local agriculture, and the province plans to continuously expand the project in the future." They added, "We will strive to help local farmers overcome their difficulties by providing high-quality breakfast to students and widely promoting Chungnam rice, which is of excellent quality and taste."
