Cheonan, South Korea – A group of enthusiastic students from Cheonan has presented a comprehensive list of policy proposals aimed at improving their city. The young visionaries, ranging from elementary to high school, shared their ideas at the recent "2024 Cheonan City Children's Participation Group Policy Proposal Presentation Ceremony."
Among the 14 policy proposals, a standout suggestion was to revitalize physical education activities in schools by designating certain schools as pilot programs. Students believe that increased physical activity can contribute to their overall well-being and academic performance.
The Children's Participation Committee, comprised of 35 students, also put forward creative ideas such as:
Creating a QR code system to locate smoking areas
Introducing a "fun fun kickboard" initiative to promote safe and enjoyable transportation
Implementing a "Happy Card" cultural pass for families with dual-income parents
Meanwhile, the Children's Rights Monitoring Group, consisting of 40 elementary school students, proposed additional initiatives including:
Establishing a Cheonan City children's reporter program
Creating safe media environments for children
Building more spaces for children to relax and unwind
Mayor Park Sang-don expressed his appreciation for the students' thoughtful proposals, emphasizing the importance of listening to the voices of the city's youth. "As the rights holders and future leaders of our city, children's participation in policymaking is crucial," Mayor Park said. "We will carefully review these suggestions and work to incorporate them into our city's plans."
Cheonan has been at the forefront of promoting children's rights, establishing the Children's Participation Committee and the Children's Rights Monitoring Group in 2020. By empowering young people to voice their opinions, the city is fostering a more inclusive and child-friendly environment.
