CARACAS – Venezuela has launched massive military exercises, named 'Independence 200', and activated national defense zones in response to heightened US military actions in the Caribbean, which Caracas alleges are aimed at regime destabilization. President Nicolás Maduro announced the large-scale deployment, which includes mobilizing civilians in 'activated comprehensive defense zones,' posing a direct challenge to Washington.
Regional tension has notably escalated. The United States, citing drug trafficking interdiction, has increased its presence, including the deployment of military assets like the B-52 strategic bomber near the Caribbean, and authorized alleged CIA covert operations within Venezuela. Recently, an attack on a vessel near Venezuelan waters resulted in six deaths, which Caracas views as an act of aggression.
Amid this growing threat, Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino urged citizens to "prepare for the worst," anticipating a possible armed conflict with the US. However, military analysts point out that the significant disparity in military power suggests the Venezuelan move has a greater domestic political purpose.
Experts, such as CRIES President Andrei Ponte, have suggested that Maduro’s primary objective is the consolidation of popular support and the management of "internal instability or conflict," rather than effective military defense against conventional US power. Speculation is that Washington's actions, while ostensibly for counter-narcotics, ultimately aim for the removal of President Maduro.
