A Korean mother and daughter have recently faced strong public criticism after being photographed monopolizing five public benches while sleeping at Singapore Changi Airport. The incident occurred in a crowded waiting area due to a flight delay, leaving many passengers to sit on the floor.
The photograph, which was posted on the online community 'Bobaedream' on the 16th, clearly shows the mother and daughter lying across multiple seats, indifferent to the surrounding crowd. According to the original poster, 'A,' who witnessed the scene, the flight was delayed by about 20 minutes, and many people had nowhere to sit. Despite the congestion, the mother, who was observed opening her eyes and looking around, simply closed them again to continue sleeping.
Netizens were quick to express their disapproval of the pair’s lack of public etiquette, with comments criticizing the behavior as "national disgrace" and lamenting the negative example set by the mother for her daughter. Many pointed out the hypocrisy of criticizing other nationalities for bad manners when such incidents occur among Koreans abroad.
This incident is the latest in a series of reported cases of poor etiquette by Korean tourists in public places overseas. Recent controversies include a man putting his feet on a table at a cafe in Nha Trang, Vietnam, and several Koreans sleeping with their feet up on dining tables in a Da Nang airport lounge. These repeated displays of inconsiderate behavior in public spaces are drawing growing concern over the damage they inflict on South Korea's national image. Experts and the public alike are emphasizing the urgent need for better public education on international travel etiquette.
