The UK is considering waiving visa fees for top-tier professionals as part of its strategy to attract global talent. This move stands in stark contrast to the United States, where President Donald Trump raised the fees for professional visas by 100 times, arguing that foreigners were taking American jobs.

According to the Financial Times, the UK Prime Minister's Office has established a "Global Talent Taskforce" to explore ways of recruiting experts in various fields like science and digital technology. A key proposal being discussed is the elimination of visa fees for the most highly skilled professionals, such as graduates from the top five global universities or recipients of prestigious awards.

Since 2020, the UK has been operating the Global Talent Visa scheme for experts in science, engineering, humanities, medicine, digital, and arts. This visa allows a five-year stay, with the possibility of extension and a path to permanent residency under certain conditions.

However, the visa has been criticized for being difficult to obtain and expensive. The application fee is £766 (approximately $940), with dependents also required to pay the same amount. Additionally, an annual healthcare surcharge of £1,035 per person is typically levied. A UK government official described the current system as a "bureaucratic nightmare" to the Financial Times, and officials are working on streamlining the visa process.

The US's decision to hike professional visa fees has given momentum to the UK's visa reform efforts, enhancing its competitiveness in attracting talent. While the UK's reforms were under discussion before the US's policy change, Trump's decision "galvanized policymakers in the UK."

The upcoming budget announcement in November is also influencing the visa system overhaul. The government aims to boost economic growth by attracting talent and is identifying tax-related obstacles to global talent acquisition. The Labour Party has also pledged to provide a fast-track visa process for individuals who can drive growth in key strategic industries.

A government official clarified that these discussions do not weaken the UK's commitment to reducing net migration but are aimed at bringing the "very best talent to the UK." The Home Office spokesperson affirmed that the Global Talent Visa scheme helps the UK maintain its status as an international hub for talent and innovation.
