Most, Czech Republic – On Saturday, March 1, 2025, the Czech Republic made history as 2,461 intrepid cold-water swimmers plunged into the icy depths of Most Lake, establishing a new Guinness World Record for the largest polar bear dip. This extraordinary feat surpassed the previous record of 1,799 participants, set in Mielno, Poland, in 2015.
Amidst frigid air temperatures, participants braved water temperatures of 3.5 degrees Celsius (38.2 degrees Fahrenheit) to achieve this remarkable milestone. To adhere to strict Guinness World Records guidelines, each swimmer was required to wear a bathing suit, submerge to at least waist depth, and remain in the water for a minimum of one minute.
The event was masterfully organized by David Vencl, a renowned Czech freediver celebrated for his exceptional accomplishments in cold-water swimming. Notably, in 2021, Vencl set a world record by swimming 80.9 meters under ice without a wetsuit. His unwavering passion for cold-water immersion and dedication to promoting the sport were instrumental in mobilizing such a vast number of participants for this record-breaking endeavor.
Cold-water swimming, often referred to as “polar bear dipping,” holds deep cultural significance in the Czech Republic. The activity is cherished not only for its exhilarating nature but also for its purported health benefits, including improved circulation and enhanced immune function. With its growing popularity, communities across the country frequently host winter swimming events, fostering a strong sense of camaraderie and shared experience.
The successful record attempt at Most Lake has garnered widespread international acclaim. Global media outlets have highlighted the participants’ courage and determination, celebrating their achievement and setting a new benchmark for cold-water enthusiasts worldwide. The event has not only showcased the Czech Republic's passion for this unique sport but also highlighted the country's spirit of community and resilience.
