San Salvador, El Salvador – In a remarkable turn of events, El Salvador has achieved an unprecedented 31 consecutive days without a single homicide, according to the National Civil Police (PNC). This significant milestone has been attributed to the policies implemented under President Nayib Bukele’s administration.
The PNC reported that from November 25th to December 25th, no homicides were recorded across the nation. This remarkable streak has added to a growing trend of decreased violence in the country. The data reveals that in 2024 alone, there have been a total of 274 days without violent deaths.
October previously held the record for the safest month, with 27 days without homicides. However, November closely followed with 25 days. The decline in homicides has been consistent throughout the year, with months like September, August, and July also recording significant periods without violent deaths.
President Bukele expressed his satisfaction with these results on social media, stating that while some of the success can be attributed to specific policies, there is also a spiritual element at play. "We have won a spiritual battle," he declared.
The dramatic reduction in homicides has been linked to the state of exception, a controversial measure implemented by the government to curb gang violence. While the policy has been praised for its effectiveness in reducing crime, it has also faced criticism from human rights organizations over concerns about potential abuses.
As El Salvador continues to experience this period of relative peace, experts and observers are closely watching to see if this trend will continue and if the government can sustain these results in the long term.
