Japan's number of suicides last year fell below 20,000 for the first time since statistics began, recording an all-time low. However, the number of suicides among elementary, middle, and high school students increased to a record high.
The Japanese government approved the "2026 Suicide White Paper" containing these findings at a Cabinet meeting on the 23rd.
According to the white paper released by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, Japan's total number of suicides last year stood at 19,188, a decrease of 1,132 from the previous year.
This is the lowest figure since relevant statistics began being compiled in 1978, and the first time the count has fallen below 20,000 since the record-keeping started.
Japan's overall number of suicides peaked at 34,427 in 2003 and has since been on a downward trend.
On the other hand, the number of suicides among children and adolescents reached a record high.
The number of suicides among elementary, middle, and high school students totaled 538—comprising 10 elementary school students, 172 middle school students, and 356 high school students—marking the highest figure since records began in 1980.
In addition, the suicide mortality rates for males and females aged 19 and under, as well as women in their 20s, were found to be on a recent upward trend.
Health and welfare issues and financial hardships were cited as major causes and motives for suicide.
Among both men and women, certain groups such as single-person households, office workers, and pension recipients showed no decreasing trend in the number of suicides.
According to NHK, Health, Labour and Welfare Minister Ueno stated at a press conference following the Cabinet meeting, "The number of suicides remains in a critical situation," adding, "We will strengthen counseling and support systems in cooperation with related ministries and vigorously promote measures for children and adolescents."
