Rise in Adult Learners Pursuing Degrees Through Credit Bank and Self-Directed Systems in South Korea

Seoul, South Korea – The trend of adults pursuing academic degrees through the Credit Bank System and the Self-Directed Degree System in South Korea is on the rise, according to recent data released by the Ministry of Education and the National Institute for Lifelong Education.
During the '2025 Credit Bank System and Self-Directed Degree System Online Degree Conferral Ceremony' held on February 25th, it was revealed that the rate of individuals obtaining degrees through the Credit Bank System after graduating from universities and colleges has increased for the third consecutive year. This year, 59.0% of Credit Bank System degree recipients were university or college graduates seeking further qualifications and personal development.
Additionally, a significant portion (57.1%) of those obtaining degrees through the Self-Directed Degree System are working professionals balancing work and study.
A total of 38,059 individuals received degrees at the ceremony, with 37,499 earning degrees through the Credit Bank System and 560 through the Self-Directed Degree System. Outstanding achievers were recognized with top, excellence, and special awards.
The Credit Bank System and the Self-Directed Degree System offer flexible pathways for adult learners to achieve academic qualifications. Since their inception, these systems have enabled over 1.1 million individuals to earn degrees, providing valuable opportunities for lifelong learning.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Lee Ju-ho emphasized the government's commitment to supporting lifelong learning, stating, "The Ministry of Education will do its best to create a society where everyone can gain opportunities and dream of a better future through lifelong learning."
