Jeju, South Korea – LS Electric, a leading global power equipment manufacturer, has successfully completed Korea's first high-voltage direct current (HVDC) subsea cable project, connecting the mainland to Jeju Island. This significant achievement marks a major milestone in the country's efforts to enhance its power grid and promote renewable energy integration.
The project, known as the Jeju 3-link, involved the construction of approximately 90 kilometers of subsea cable between Wando, South Jeolla Province, and Jeju Island. LS Electric, which previously completed the Jeju 2-link project in 2009, secured a 230 billion won contract for this latest endeavor.
HVDC technology enables the efficient transmission of large amounts of electricity over long distances by converting alternating current (AC) power, typically generated from renewable sources like solar and wind, into direct current (DC). Compared to traditional AC transmission, HVDC offers lower transmission losses, reduced electromagnetic interference, and the ability to transmit power in both directions, making it ideal for integrating variable renewable energy sources into the grid.
LS Electric, in collaboration with its affiliate LS Marine Solutions, successfully manufactured and installed the HVDC subsea cable, leveraging its advanced engineering capabilities. The company's expertise in HVDC technology has positioned it as a global leader in this field, with few other companies worldwide possessing the capability to commercialize HVDC subsea cables.
"The completion of the Jeju 3-link project is a testament to the collaborative efforts of Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), LS Electric, LS Marine Solutions, and our construction partners," said Kim Hyung-won, Head of the Energy and Construction Business Division at LS Electric. "This project represents a significant achievement for Team Korea."
With the successful completion of the Jeju 3-link project, LS Electric has further solidified its position as a key player in the global energy transition. The company's innovative solutions and commitment to sustainable development are helping to shape the future of the power industry.
