Gyeonggi Province is launching a program to support the preservation and revitalization of traditional Korean Hanok architecture by providing financial assistance for minor repairs and maintenance. From February 3 to March 14, the province will accept applications for its ‘Hanok Architecture Minor Repair Emergency Support Project’, offering up to 4 million won per household.

The project targets Hanok buildings within Gyeonggi Province that require urgent repairs, such as replacing damaged roof tiles, fixing leaks, or addressing severe wood decay. Priority will be given to residential homes, neighborhood facilities, and Hanok experience centers. The support will cover up to half of the total construction costs, with a maximum of 4 million won provided directly from the provincial budget.

Hanok owners interested in participating can download the application forms from the Gyeonggi Province website and submit them along with the required documents via (electronic) mail or in person to the Architecture Policy Division (30, Dochong-ro, Yeongtong-gu, Suwon-si / scarlet74@gg.go.kr).

Applications will be reviewed by the Gyeonggi Provincial Architecture Committee, which will determine eligibility and notify selected applicants in April. After the completion of repairs, the subsidy will be disbursed following a settlement process.

Park Jong-geun, head of the Gyeonggi Province Architecture Policy Division, stated, “Through the Hanok Minor Repair Emergency Support Project, which has been ongoing since 2021, we aim to support the preservation of traditional Hanok and create a comfortable and safe living environment.” He added, “Starting this year, we will provide customized Hanok maintenance technical advisory opinions through on-site visits by Hanok experts, actively supporting residents who face difficulties in repairing Hanok due to a lack of specialized skills.”

In addition to this project, Gyeonggi Province has been implementing the ‘Hanok Architecture Support Project’ since 2020, in collaboration with local cities and counties, to assist with the costs of new Hanok construction and repairs. Following a demand survey last year, the province plans to provide 27 million won in provincial funds to Goyang, Pyeongtaek, Anseong, and Pocheon, which will be combined with 63 million won from city funds to carry out Hanok construction and repair projects with a total budget of 90 million won.
