CORONEL OVIEDO, PARAGUAY - A tragic incident occurred where 31-year-old Leticia Ruiz Díaz, who was pregnant, lost her four-month-old fetus during surgery after being transferred from the Coronel Oviedo Gynecology Hospital to the Coronel Oviedo Regional Hospital due to severe abdominal pain. The family is alleging medical negligence, pointing to a lack of clear explanation from the medical staff and delays in proceeding with the surgery.
Díaz, originally from Santa Rosa del Mbutuy, arrived at the emergency room last Sunday, received medical attention, and was diagnosed with suspected appendicitis, leading to the decision for surgery. However, according to her family, the surgery was delayed, and ultimately, Díaz, who was four months pregnant, lost her fetus after the operation and is currently receiving intensive care treatment.
The family is expressing strong suspicion of medical malpractice, expressing frustration with the hospital's inadequate response and unclear explanations regarding the situation.
In response, the director of Coronel Oviedo Hospital, Dr. Lorena Ocampos, stated that she has requested a report on the overall medical services provided to the pregnant woman and will report the exact circumstances to the Fifth Health Region after ascertaining them.
This incident, along with the alleged illegal sale of birth certificates in Catueté, is amplifying concerns about the Paraguayan healthcare system.
