A four-year-old Dalmatian named Spotty recently enjoyed a luxurious flight experience, traveling in business class on Singapore Airlines (SIA) from Switzerland to Japan. A video documenting Spotty's journey, posted on the Instagram page Spottytheswissdalmatian, has gone viral, amassing over 5.2 million views.
The video showcases Spotty's impeccable behavior throughout the five-and-a-half-hour flight. From relaxing in the airport lounge before boarding to napping calmly and wagging her tail contentedly in the business class cabin, Spotty displayed no signs of anxiety or discomfort. Her well-mannered demeanor impressed many viewers, with one Instagram user commenting that she behaved better than many human passengers.
The viral video sparked curiosity among netizens regarding SIA's pet policies, particularly for business class travel. Many inquired about the possibility of traveling with dogs on the airline. Spotty's owner clarified in the comments section that Spotty is a registered service dog, also known as an assistance dog.
Singapore Airlines' official website confirms that they accept assistance dogs on board their flights. These are defined as dogs specifically trained to perform tasks for individuals with disabilities or medical conditions, such as guide dogs for the visually impaired or hearing dogs. However, SIA's policy distinguishes assistance dogs from emotional support dogs, comfort dogs, companionship dogs, and assistance dogs-in-training, none of which are recognized as assistance dogs under their regulations.
It's important to note that since April 2023, Singapore Airlines has discontinued allowing emotional support dogs to travel on their flights. Therefore, Spotty's travel was possible due to her status as a registered assistance dog, highlighting the airline's specific policy regarding these specialized animals.
