Luang Prabang, Laos – The Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Summit 2024 brought together 100 young leaders from across ASEAN and Timor-Leste in the historic city of Luang Prabang from December 2nd to 5th. Under the theme “Connecting the Creative Economy,” the event explored the potential of creative industries to drive innovation, preserve culture, and foster sustainable development in the region.

Supported by the US Department of State, the US Embassy in Vientiane, and YSEALI, and implemented by STELLA and Quack, two Laotian youth empowerment groups, the Summit offered a diverse range of activities, including workshops, masterclasses, panel discussions, and cultural exchanges.

“YSEALI continues to be a beacon of hope and inspiration in our region,” said Heather Variava, the US Ambassador to Laos, during the closing ceremony. “This Summit has once again demonstrated the power of collaboration and innovation in shaping a brighter future.”

One of the highlights of the Summit was a series of masterclasses led by renowned experts, including Adele Lim, co-writer of Crazy Rich Asians, and Steve Arounsack, cultural advisor for Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon. These sessions delved into topics such as the intersection of technology and creativity and the art of storytelling, inspiring participants to think critically and explore new possibilities.

Panel discussions focused on the potential of the creative economy to drive economic growth and social change. Participants discussed the strengths of ASEAN’s creative industries and explored strategies for harnessing the power of creativity to address regional challenges.

Cultural immersion was also a key component of the Summit. Participants visited local creative hubs like the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre and Baan Chan Pottery Village, gaining firsthand insights into traditional crafts and contemporary innovations.

To foster collaboration and empower young leaders, the Summit provided participants with an opportunity to develop project ideas and compete for a share of YSEALI’s USD 40,000 small grant pool. These grants will enable young leaders to implement innovative projects that have a positive impact on their communities.

As the Summit concluded, participants left Luang Prabang inspired and equipped to drive the creative economy forward. YSEALI continues to empower young leaders to address critical challenges and build a more prosperous and sustainable future for Southeast Asia.
