Naver, South Korea’s tech giant, is making a bold move into the rapidly expanding virtual entertainment sector. The company has officially launched a series of high-level Research and Development (R&D) projects aimed at developing AI-driven 3D VTubers (Virtual YouTubers) capable of real-time emotional expression and advanced interaction. This strategic initiative seeks to secure a dominant position in a global market projected to reach approximately $49.94 billion (74 trillion KRW) by 2032.
The Evolution of Virtual Presence: Beyond Motion Tracking
According to industry sources on the 18th, Naver has been accelerating its R&D efforts since late last year, focusing on three core technological pillars. The most significant breakthrough involves the integration of real-time dialogue, emotion analysis, and automatic facial expression/motion generation into an autonomous AI 3D virtual streamer model.
Unlike traditional VTubing, which relies heavily on manual input or basic facial landmark tracking, Naver’s new technology analyzes the streamer's underlying emotions and automatically applies them to the 3D avatar. This creates a more immersive and "human-like" experience for viewers, bridging the emotional gap between the virtual character and the audience.
Streamlining Production with Generative AI
Naver is also tackling the logistical hurdles of virtual content creation. A second R&D task focuses on establishing an AI-powered pre-production support system for virtual concerts and music videos. By using generative AI to automatically create concepts and storyboards, the company aims to significantly reduce the time and costs associated with high-quality virtual productions.
"The goal is to lower the barrier to entry for creators while maximizing the efficiency of the production ecosystem," a Naver representative stated. "By reducing human dependency and automating complex processes, we are building a sustainable infrastructure for virtual Intellectual Property (IP)."
Capturing a High-Growth Global Market
The push into VTubing is driven by staggering growth forecasts. Research firm Intel Market Research estimates that the VTuber market, valued at $5.36 billion in 2024, will grow at an annual rate of 38.5%, reaching nearly $50 billion by 2032.
Naver’s strategy involves democratizing the technology. Their mobile streaming app, 'PRISM Live Studio,' already allows users to stream using 3D avatars via smartphones, eliminating the need for expensive motion-capture gear. Furthermore, the company opened 'Motion Stage' last year, a specialized studio equipped with over 60 high-precision motion capture cameras, to support professional-grade virtual content.
A New Cultural Mainstream
As virtual characters move from subculture to mainstream entertainment, Naver's investment reflects a conviction that digital avatars will define the next era of social interaction. By merging its industry-leading AI capabilities with its robust streaming infrastructure (such as the platform 'CHZZK'), Naver is positioned to lead the qualitative growth of the virtual ecosystem.
"Virtual content has already established itself as a mainstream cultural phenomenon with explosive growth potential," the Naver official added. "We will continue our research and investment to lead the global market with our sophisticated technological edge."
