Nairobi, Kenya – General Charles Kahariri, Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF) of Kenya, welcomed a high-level delegation from the Italian Air Force, led by Lieutenant General Luca Goretti, Commander of the Italian Air Force, to Defence Headquarters in Nairobi today. The meeting underscored the growing strategic partnership between Kenya and Italy, with a strong focus on enhancing defence capabilities and technological collaboration.

The discussions centered on bolstering bilateral defence relations through increased cooperation in crucial areas such as military training, advanced equipment acquisition, and joint strategic initiatives, particularly at the Luigi Broglio Space Centre in Malindi. This space center, a historical site of collaboration between the two nations, is poised to become a hub for cutting-edge space technology development.

General Kahariri emphasized Kenya's interest in expanding collaboration within the realm of space technology, highlighting the potential for joint ventures in geo-imagery, disaster management systems, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) manufacturing, and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into defence capabilities. These technologies are seen as vital for enhancing Kenya's national security and disaster response capabilities.

A key focus of the meeting was the urgent need to finalize the Defence Cooperation Agreement between Kenya and Italy. This agreement is expected to provide a robust framework for strengthening technology partnerships and fostering the development of local capacity for the maintenance and sustainment of sophisticated military assets. This initiative aims to reduce reliance on external support and promote self-sufficiency in defence maintenance.

The meeting was attended by key Kenyan military officials, including Major General Frederick Leuria, Assistant Chief of Defence Forces Operations, Doctrine & Training; Major General David Keter, Assistant Chief of Defence Forces Personnel & Logistics; and Major General Bernard Waliaula, Director General Defence National Security Industries. The Italian delegation included H.E. Roberto Natali, the Italian Ambassador to Kenya, and Captain Mario de Rosa, Italy’s Defence Attaché, along with other senior military officers from both nations.

The strategic dialogue between Kenya and Italy reflects a shared commitment to fostering security and technological advancement. By strengthening their defence partnership, both nations aim to address evolving security challenges and promote regional stability. The focus on space technology and local capacity building highlights a forward-looking approach to defence cooperation, ensuring long-term benefits for both countries.
