Singapore – A British Airways crew member has been arrested and detained in Singapore on suspicion of sexually assaulting a fellow female crew member. The incident is reported to have taken place after a social gathering among the crew during a scheduled layover between flights.
Singaporean authorities are currently investigating the allegations. British Airways has responded by sending management representatives to Singapore to assist local law enforcement with their inquiries and to provide support to the detained employee. Two female British Airways staff members related to the incident have already returned to the United Kingdom.
The arrest has sent shockwaves through the British Airways workforce, particularly given the accused's long-standing employment with the airline. The legal ramifications in Singapore are severe, with convictions for sexual assault potentially leading to up to 20 years of imprisonment, substantial fines, or corporal punishment.
This incident follows a series of recent controversies involving British Airways crew in Singapore. In February 2025, a British Airways pilot and crew member were suspended following allegations of illegal drug possession, reported by their colleagues. Additionally, a seasoned British Airways pilot is currently facing legal proceedings in Singapore after being charged with sexually assaulting a crew member during off-duty hours. In 2023, a British Airways pilot was dismissed after boasting about cocaine use to colleagues before a flight from South Africa to the UK.
A British Airways spokesperson stated, "As this is a police matter, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further."
Separately, in January 2025, three Virgin Australia crew members reported incidents of theft and sexual assault during New Year's Eve celebrations in Nadi, Fiji, prompting a police investigation.
