Mekong River Commission Opens Education Center and Launches One Mekong App in Laos

Vientiane, Laos – The Mekong River Commission (MRC) on December 23rd celebrated the opening of its new Education and Visitor Center and the launch of the One Mekong app at its headquarters in Vientiane, Laos. The event also commemorated the 20th anniversary of Laos hosting the MRC Secretariat.
The state-of-the-art center features interactive exhibits, maps, and real-time monitoring tools, offering a comprehensive overview of the Mekong River's history and its significance in regional cooperation. It will serve as a platform for educational programs, conferences, and public outreach initiatives, aiming to enhance understanding of the river's importance and the MRC's vital work.
A key highlight of the center is the Situation Room, equipped with real-time river monitoring and forecasting capabilities. This cutting-edge facility, connected to the MRC's Regional Flood and Drought Management Center in Phnom Penh, will play a crucial role in disaster management, climate change adaptation, and cross-border collaboration.
The launch of the One Mekong app provides the public with convenient access to real-time data and forecasts related to the river, empowering communities and stakeholders with valuable information.
Laotian Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone expressed his pride in hosting the MRC Secretariat and acknowledged the crucial support of development partners, including Japan, Morocco, and the United States, in the successful completion of this project.
Anoulak Kittikhoun, CEO of the MRC Secretariat, emphasized the center's role as a bridge between knowledge and action, showcasing the power of science, data, and community engagement. He expressed his hope that this world-class facility will inspire collective action for the sustainable future of the Mekong River.
