The library will now open on the first and third Saturdays of each month to offer greater cultural opportunities for visitors.

 

Gyeongju, South Korea — The Gyeongju National Museum has announced that its internal library, the Silla Millennium Library, will now be open on Saturdays to improve accessibility for visitors. Previously, the library was only available on weekdays, and this new expansion of hours will provide more opportunities for the public to enjoy the museum's resources. The new Saturday hours began on July 19th.

The Silla Millennium Library, which opened in 2022, is a specialized library located inside the museum's West Wing, a building originally constructed in 1973. It was established to provide a dedicated space where the public can access a vast collection of specialized books and materials related to Silla history and Gyeongju. The collection includes a wide range of resources, such as books published by the Gyeongju National Museum, domestic and international exhibition catalogs, and professional literature on archaeology, art history, and national heritage. Visitors can comfortably browse these materials in a quiet, relaxed atmosphere. The library's interior, a modern reinterpretation of traditional Korean hanok architecture, also provides a visually pleasing and unique experience for guests.

In conjunction with the special exhibition, <Creating a Azure World, Goryeo Celadon with Figurative Designs>, the Silla Millennium Library is also running a special book curation. This curated selection features books that focus on the history and artistic beauty of Korean ceramics, including celadon. It is designed to help visitors gain a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the exhibition's themes.

The museum's director, Yoon Sang-deok, stated, "We hope that by opening the Silla Millennium Library on weekends, visitors will gain a better understanding of Silla history and culture and see the museum as a more comfortable and familiar space."

This expansion of library hours is part of the museum's broader plan to enhance its role as a specialized cultural institution and to continuously expand the information it provides in connection with its exhibitions. The museum aims to make its valuable resources more widely available to the public and solidify its position as a central hub for the study and appreciation of Korean heritage.
