Wyoming native Jaelin Kauf (28), a freestyle skiing sensation, has achieved an unprecedented feat by clinching both the moguls and dual moguls titles at this season's International Ski Federation (FIS) World Cup. Her triumph in the dual moguls event on March 1st at the Shymbulak Mountain Resort in Kazakhstan, where she defeated Japan's Rino Yanagimoto, secured her the overall season victory in that discipline. Continuing her stellar performance, she also topped the season rankings in the single moguls category.

Kauf could barely contain her elation at the remarkable achievement on the slopes of Central Asia, a region somewhat distant from Europe's renowned ski destinations. She reportedly exchanged text messages with her parents immediately after the competition, asking in disbelief, "Did I just win the overall too?"

Born in Vail, Colorado, to parents who were professional mogul skiers, Kauf moved with her family to Alta and Grand Targhee Resort in Wyoming at the age of three. Initially, the bumpy mogul courses felt unfamiliar, but she was driven by a desire to keep up with her older brother, Skyler, in conquering the challenging terrain. Her mother, Patti, recalled, "We used to practice 360 spins off little jumps on the side of the hill or the road."

Historically, skiing competitions primarily involved racing down smooth slopes or navigating gates. However, in the 1970s, Canadian skier Wayne Wong revolutionized the sport by showcasing flamboyant techniques and a unique style on mogul courses, giving rise to freestyle mogul skiing as a new discipline. He inspired many skiers with his "Wong-Banger" flip technique.

Today's freestyle mogul competitions take place on artificially constructed mogul fields, with skiers performing aerial maneuvers off two jumps. Judges evaluate athletes based on their speed, style, and the execution of their techniques. Dual moguls events pit two skiers against each other as they race down parallel courses.

While Kauf's hometown of Grand Targhee Resort boasts abundant snowfall and natural mogul runs, it wasn't the ideal training ground for aerial tricks. She honed her aerial skills by practicing on a trampoline. After entering high school, her family moved to Steamboat Springs, Colorado, where she could dedicate herself to intensive aerial training. Steamboat Springs is home to Howelsen Hill, a natural ski jump facility, which also offers water ramps for summer aerial practice.

Through systematic training, Kauf began to make her mark on the international stage, earning the Rookie of the Year award on the World Cup tour in 2016. Since then, she has accumulated an impressive list of achievements, including 16 World Cup victories, 50 World Cup podium finishes, a World Championship gold medal, seven U.S. Championship titles, and a silver medal at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Alongside fellow Wyoming native Brynn Johnson, Kauf is once again placing Wyoming at the forefront of the global skiing scene.

Kauf competed in the final event of the season in St. Moritz, Switzerland, cheered on by her family. Although freestyle skiing doesn't enjoy the same level of popularity as alpine skiing in Europe, Kauf's dominant performance captivated the local spectators.

Having already competed in two Olympic Games, Kauf aims to win gold medals in both the individual and dual moguls events at the upcoming 2026 Cortina Winter Olympics. She stated, "I need to put a lot of thought into my duals strategy as well as my singles. I want to land cleaner, higher-difficulty jumps and achieve the best possible results."

The words "Deliver the Love" are inscribed on the back of Kauf's helmet, while "Grand Targhee" adorns the front. Her equipment bag contains brown and gold items, symbolizing her home state of Wyoming. She consistently carries the spirit of her hometown with her as she delivers top-tier performances on the world stage.
