LISBON, Portugal – Portugal has achieved a significant milestone in its transition to electric mobility, surpassing the 100,000 mark for electric vehicles (EVs) on its roads. According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), this figure was reached by the end of 2023.
While EV sales have continued to grow, the pace has moderated compared to previous years. Nevertheless, this achievement underscores the increasing popularity of electric vehicles in Portugal. The Portuguese Automobile Association (ACAP) is optimistic about future growth, projecting that the number of EVs could double to 200,000 within the next three years.
The INE’s 2023 Transport and Communications report revealed a notable trend: a simultaneous decline in petrol and diesel vehicles (-1.0% and -1.2%, respectively), while 100% electric vehicles experienced a substantial surge of 65.4%. This data is based on figures from the Institute of Mobility and Transport.
Helder Pedro, General-Secretary of the ACAP, attributed the increasing EV adoption to strong sales figures. He highlighted that 2023 witnessed triple-digit growth in EV sales, with annual increases exceeding 100%.
Since the beginning of 2024, approximately 32,500 new 100% electric vehicles have been introduced to the market. This, coupled with a 15% increase in overall new vehicle registrations, indicates a significant shift towards electric mobility in Portugal.
