Seoul, South Korea – Mandarin Robotics, a food tech startup, has unveiled a revolutionary robotic wok cook designed to address the challenges faced by Chinese food franchises. The company's founder, Kim Min-kyu, envisions using this technology to lower the barriers to entry for wok cooking and expand the reach of Chinese cuisine through franchising.
"The franchise industry has largely focused on foods like pizza, burgers, and sandwiches that are relatively easy to produce consistently," said Kim. "In contrast, Chinese cuisine, while popular, has seen limited expansion into franchising due to the complexity of the dishes and the shortage of skilled chefs."
Mandarin Robotics has developed two key robotic components: a robotic sauce maker that precisely dispenses measured amounts of sauce, and a robotic wok that can replicate the actions of a human chef, stirring and cooking ingredients to perfection.
The system operates by generating a QR code for each order, which is then sent to the robots. The robots use this information to dispense the correct ingredients and execute the programmed cooking motions. The company claims to have analyzed over 3,800 cooking motions to create a library of over 100 recipes.
"We've analyzed the movements of renowned chefs and programmed our robots to replicate those techniques," said Kim. "Once a recipe is taught to the robot, it can produce the same dish consistently."
The company has ambitious plans to expand its business. "We aim to turn these cooking techniques into intellectual property and license them to franchisees," Kim said. "Our goal is to open 500 franchised restaurants and generate annual sales of 420 billion won."
Mandarin Robotics believes that its robotic wok cook can address several challenges facing the food industry, including:
Consistent quality: By following precise recipes and cooking techniques, the robots can produce food with a consistent taste and quality.
Labor shortages: The robots can reduce the reliance on skilled chefs, addressing labor shortages in the industry.
Improved safety: The robots can perform repetitive tasks, reducing the risk of injuries to human workers.
Increased efficiency: The robots can prepare large quantities of food quickly and efficiently.
Mandarin Robotics has already conducted successful trials of its robotic wok cook, including a large-scale demonstration at Seoul National University where it served over 900 students.
With its innovative technology and ambitious plans, Mandarin Robotics is poised to revolutionize the Chinese food industry and beyond.
