Nakuru, Kenya – The County Government of Nakuru is prioritizing the training of Community Health Promoters (CHPs) as a cornerstone of its universal healthcare initiative. The aim is to enhance their capacity to deliver essential primary healthcare services.

County Executive Committee Member for Health Services, Ms. Roselyn Mungai, emphasized the critical role of CHPs in the county's healthcare system. She highlighted their position as the first point of contact for patients in the community, making them vital for providing accessible and affordable healthcare.

Ms. Mungai acknowledged the challenges posed by Kenya's low doctor-to-patient ratio, which often limits access to medical care for many citizens. The CHP program, launched last year, aims to address this issue by deploying 100,000 trained CHPs across the country to support community health units.

The program aligns with the Kenya 2020-2030 Community Health Policy, which seeks to empower communities to take charge of their health. By bringing healthcare closer to the people, CHPs can identify health priorities, participate in service delivery planning, and promote preventive healthcare measures.

Since the deployment of CHPs, the county has witnessed an increase in referrals to hospitals. Early detection of conditions like diabetes and hypertension through basic tests has led to timely diagnosis and treatment.

The CHPs are receiving comprehensive training in various modules, including maternal and child health, disease prevention, and basic water treatment. This training empowers them to provide essential services and promote healthy lifestyles within their communities.

Ms. Mungai expressed gratitude for the dedication of CHPs and acknowledged their significant contribution to improving health outcomes. She assured that the county government will recognize and reward their hard work.

By investing in CHPs and promoting preventive healthcare, the County Government of Nakuru aims to strengthen its healthcare system, reduce healthcare costs, and ultimately improve the overall health and well-being of its citizens.
