The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister Yoo In-chon), in collaboration with the Korea Craft and Design Foundation (Director Jang Dong-gwang) and the Korean Cultural Center in Japan (Director Gong Hyung-sik), is hosting the Korea-Japan traditional culture exchange event ‘Traditional Touch, Today’s Encounter’ at the Korean Cultural Center in Japan, Tokyo, from March 18 to April 2, to commemorate the ‘60th Anniversary of the Normalization of Korea-Japan Diplomatic Relations’.
This event, designed to create a platform for harmony by encompassing the traditional cultures of both Korea and Japan, consists of four main programs.
On March 19, the opening ceremony took place. Government officials and cultural and academic figures from both countries attended, enjoying traditional Korean and Japanese refreshments, and performances including a gayageum solo of Miki Minoru’s ‘Pine Tree’, the Korean traditional dance ‘Chunaengjeon’, and a hanbok fashion show.
Particularly, on the day of the opening ceremony, a ‘Korean Food Culture Concept Restaurant’ was operated at the Korean restaurant ‘Yoon Ga’ in Ginza, Tokyo. Chef Yoon Mi-wol, Korea’s 66th Food Master, and Head Chef Yoshihara Masahiro of Tokyo’s ‘Orion Sushi’ collaborated to prepare traditional Korean and Japanese dishes. Korea and Japan, geographically close, share similar ingredients such as broth, soybean paste, and soy sauce, yet have developed unique food cultures with their own distinct characteristics. The culinary masters of Korea and Japan will present a course menu that combines these traditions with a modern sensibility. The aim is to foster mutual understanding and promote friendship through the cultural values of both countries’ cuisines.
