AREGUÁ, PARAGUAY – Nearly 1,900 residents in a neighborhood outside Paraguay's capital, Asunción, benefited from a comprehensive free health fair held from March 29 to April 2. The initiative, a collaborative effort between the Asunción Adventist Sanitarium (SAA) and AdventHealth, took place at the Amanecer Family Health Unit in the Boquerón neighborhood of Areguá, according to reports from regional church leaders.

The five-day event provided crucial access to a wide range of medical services for the local community. Residents received specialized consultations in areas such as family medicine (for both adults and children), cardiology, gynecology, urology, psychology, and ophthalmology. Furthermore, the health fair offered essential diagnostic procedures, including cardiological and laboratory studies, ultrasounds, ECGs, and Pap smears, as needed. A particularly valuable aspect of the ophthalmology services was the provision of free prescription glasses to those in need. The initiative also included dedicated programs tailored for children, ensuring healthcare access for the younger members of the community.

Juan Castro, the director of SAA, expressed his pleasant surprise at the high turnout, stating, "We have been pleasantly surprised with the number of people who came to be treated." Beyond the immediate care provided, women who attended the fair were also offered a complimentary pass for a mammogram examination at the Asunción Adventist Sanitarium, underscoring a commitment to preventative health measures.

Local city council member Hebert Roa conveyed his deep gratitude for the impactful initiative. "I thank God for the wonderful medical care provided by the Adventist sanitarium. Without their support, it would not have been possible for so many people to receive care and leave with a smile," Roa remarked. He further extended his appreciation to the "team of doctors and nurses and the pastor for their impressive work during these five days."

The success of the health fair was attributed to a strong spirit of solidarity and community engagement. Organizers reported the invaluable contribution of 17 volunteer medical professionals from the United States, who worked alongside local staff and medical personnel from SAA. The Municipality of Areguá, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Paraguay, and the local Adventist church also played pivotal roles in providing logistical support and assisting patients throughout the event.

Brittany Browning, the project leader for AdventHealth, shared her positive experience of facilitating medical missions in Paraguay. "This is my third year coming to do mission in Paraguay. The doctors are very happy to be able to help people in this community through their specialties," Browning noted. She also highlighted the tangible contributions made through AdventHealth, including the donation of hygiene supplies, medicines, and eyeglasses for patients. Additionally, the organization donated an ultrasound machine to the Adventist sanitarium, enhancing its diagnostic capabilities. Looking to the future, Browning affirmed, "With God’s help and guidance, our plan is to return every year to continue providing medical care."

Beyond the provision of physical healthcare, the health fair also incorporated a significant spiritual dimension. Organizers reported that approximately 90 individuals expressed interest in Bible studies. The Areguá Adventist Church has already commenced organizing follow-up activities to cater to those who showed a desire to learn more about their faith.

Local resident Alicia Nuñez shared her heartfelt appreciation, stating, "I’m leaving full of blessings. We received not only medicines and health care but also words of encouragement." She also noted the positive impact on her children, who were happy to receive care and medication. Nuñez concluded with a blessing for those involved: "May God’s blessing be on all those who made this service possible with love, effort, and dedication."

Organizers emphasized that the free health fair was strategically timed in the lead-up to Easter, a period traditionally focused on service and bringing hope to communities. The event served to reinforce the commitment of the Asunción Adventist Sanitarium to holistic health and its ongoing dedication to serving the well-being of others. The success of this initiative underscores the profound impact that collaborative efforts can have in addressing healthcare needs and fostering community well-being.
