DAEGU, South Korea — North Gyeongsang Province (Gyeongsangbuk-do) is taking significant strides to broaden its international horizons by fostering a strategic partnership with El Salvador. On August 20, Governor Lee Cheol-woo met with Federico Miguel Guerrero Avendaño, the Ambassador of El Salvador to South Korea, at the provincial government office to discuss tangible ways to expand bilateral cooperation across industry, education, and culture. 

A Foundation for Mutual Growth

Governor Lee warmly welcomed the delegation, highlighting the long-standing friendly relations between South Korea and El Salvador since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1962. With August 30 now officially commemorated as "El Salvador-Korea Friendship Day," the Governor expressed his hope that the visit would serve as a catalyst for deepening the bond between the two regions. 

The meeting focused on identifying economic synergies. Governor Lee pointed out that El Salvador is rapidly emerging as a critical production and logistics hub in Central America, particularly noted for its competitive textile and apparel industry that holds strong leverage in the U.S. market. 

Integrating Technological Expertise and Industrial Infrastructure

A central pillar of the proposed cooperation model is the synergy between Gyeongsangbuk-do’s industrial prowess and El Salvador’s market advantages. Gumi, the industrial heart of Gyeongsangbuk-do, has long served as a mecca for South Korea's textile and materials industry. While Gumi has successfully transitioned toward high-tech sectors like semiconductors, smart manufacturing, and electronics, it retains deep-rooted expertise in textile technology and machinery.

The proposed initiative aims to combine Gyeongsangbuk-do's advanced technical capabilities—specifically in functional textiles, eco-friendly materials, and smart manufacturing—with El Salvador's strong production infrastructure and proximity to the North American market. The two sides intend to foster active exchanges between enterprises in these high-value sectors, with a long-term goal of jointly exploring entry into the broader Central and North American markets. 

Expanding into Agriculture and Cultural Exchange

Beyond industrial cooperation, the discussion extended to agriculture and food processing. The two leaders agreed to explore ways to integrate Gyeongsangbuk-do’s sophisticated agricultural technology and food processing expertise with El Salvador’s primary exports, such as high-quality coffee. This collaborative approach aims to add value to local products and create new export opportunities. 

Furthermore, both parties emphasized the importance of non-economic exchanges. The meeting addressed the potential for expanding cooperation in education, youth exchange programs, and the sharing of history, culture, and tourism assets.

Looking Toward the Future

Ambassador Federico Avendaño expressed his sincere gratitude for the hospitality shown by the provincial government and echoed the Governor’s enthusiasm. He stated his commitment to working toward a sustainable system of exchange that encompasses not only the economic and industrial spheres but also vital areas like culture and education. 

Governor Lee concluded the meeting by reaffirming the province's commitment to this new partnership. "Gyeongsangbuk-do is a region that preserves the deep history and traditional culture of Korea while simultaneously maintaining strong competitiveness in modern industry and agriculture," Lee said. "We are committed to identifying and cultivating new, practical cooperative projects that will elevate local government-to-government relations to the next level." 

Following this visit, the provincial government plans to solidify its cooperation framework and initiate a phased expansion of exchanges between private companies and relevant institutions, marking a new chapter in the relationship between the two regions.
