Devastating Floods in Argentina's Bahía Blanca Leave at Least Ten Dead, Trigger Mass Evacuations

Bahía Blanca, Argentina – A violent storm has unleashed catastrophic flooding upon the city of Bahía Blanca, located 600 kilometers southwest of Buenos Aires, resulting in at least ten deaths and widespread devastation. The torrential rainfall, exceeding 260 millimeters in just a few hours, transformed city streets into raging rivers, sweeping away vehicles and forcing the dramatic evacuation of hundreds of residents.

The city of over 300,000 people, a key commercial port, has been plunged into chaos as the relentless downpour overwhelmed drainage systems, leading to severe inundation. The sheer volume of water caused significant damage to critical infrastructure, including the collapse of bridges and the destruction of roads, leaving many areas of the city inaccessible.

Emergency services, including municipal teams, provincial government personnel, the Argentine Navy, and the Army, have been deployed to assist with rescue and relief efforts. However, authorities have warned that the death toll may rise as the full extent of the damage becomes clear.

Harrowing images circulating on social media and news outlets depict the desperate scenes of evacuation, with mothers carrying newborn babies being moved from waterlogged hospitals alongside medical staff. The rapid rise of floodwaters necessitated the urgent relocation of vulnerable patients, highlighting the severity of the situation.

The Argentine government has responded to the crisis, with Presidential Spokesperson Manuel Adorni announcing that President Javier Milei had suspended his scheduled activities in the province of Mendoza. Furthermore, the ministers of Security and Defense, Patricia Bullrich and Luis Petri, respectively, have arrived in Bahía Blanca to oversee the relief operations.

In a show of support, Economy Minister Luis Caputo announced on social media platform X that the national government has authorized 10 billion pesos (approximately $9.2 million USD) in financial aid to the city of Bahía Blanca. This funding will be crucial in supporting the city's recovery efforts, which will include repairing damaged infrastructure, providing assistance to affected residents, and restoring essential services.

The people of Bahía Blanca now begin the difficult process of recovering from this natural disaster.
