"Peanut Land" Blends Natural Beauty with Peanut Theme, Poised to Become a Unique Tourist Destination

Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, South Korea – May 20, 2025 – Jaeun Island (자은도), a picturesque island in Sinan County, is embarking on an ambitious journey to revitalize its local tourism industry and reclaim its former glory as a renowned peanut-producing region for over four decades. The Sinan County government is actively promoting the "Peanut Land Development Project" (땅콩랜드 조성 사업) across Jaeun Island, which involves establishing various peanut-themed experiential facilities and tourist attractions.

Jaeun Island boasts stunning natural landscapes, including pristine white sandy beaches, dense pine forests, and uniquely shaped rocks. Historically, it was celebrated for producing high-quality peanuts, which were a significant source of income for the island's residents, particularly from the 1970s to the early 2000s, enjoying immense popularity in markets nationwide. However, increased competition from other regions and a decline in the agricultural population gradually led to the decline of the peanut industry, consequently impacting the local economy.

In response, Sinan County is strategically leveraging Jaeun Island's distinctive "peanut" resource and its beautiful natural environment to create new momentum for tourism through the "Peanut Land Development" project. The county is developing experiential farms utilizing peanut fields, spaces for selling and tasting peanut processed goods, and peanut-themed sculptures and photo zones to offer visitors a diverse range of attractions and activities.

From Peanut Harvesting to Tasting Processed Goods: Creating Sensory Experience Spaces

A central feature of "Peanut Land" will be the experiential farms where visitors can directly harvest and taste peanuts. The hands-on experience of touching the soil and digging up peanuts in the expansive fields is expected to provide a unique and enjoyable activity for modern individuals seeking respite from urban life. The harvested peanuts can be enjoyed freshly boiled on-site or in various processed forms such as roasted peanuts, peanut candy, and peanut ice cream.

Furthermore, diverse exhibition and educational spaces centered around peanuts will be established. An exhibition hall showcasing the peanut cultivation process, history, and nutritional value will offer informative content to visitors, while peanut-based cooking 체험 programs will provide engaging activities for participants. Additionally, souvenir shops featuring peanut characters and rest areas will be created to enhance convenience.

Harmony of Nature and Art: Installation of Unique Sculptures and Photo Zones

Throughout "Peanut Land," distinctive sculptures and photo zones that harmonize with Jaeun Island's beautiful natural scenery will be installed. Large peanut-shaped sculptures are expected to become symbolic landmarks of "Peanut Land," and various photo zones integrated with the stunning beaches will offer visitors unforgettable memories. Notably, photo zones situated on Jaeun Island's beaches, renowned for their sunset views, will be designed to provide special photo opportunities against the backdrop of the beautiful twilight.

Sinan County also plans to integrate "Peanut Land" with surrounding tourist resources. Jaeun Island offers various attractions, including scenic trekking courses along the coastline, mysterious caves, and lush forests. The county aims to develop tourist routes connecting these resources, centered around "Peanut Land," and to foster a stay-oriented tourism destination by expanding accommodation and convenience facilities.

Establishing a Resident-Led Tourism Model: Anticipating Economic Revitalization and Job Creation

The "Peanut Land" development project emphasizes establishing a resident-led tourism model that encourages the active participation of local residents, going beyond simply attracting tourists. Various local stakeholders, including peanut farmers, processors, and local artists, will be involved from the project planning stages to directly benefit economically from "Peanut Land" and create new job opportunities.

An official from Sinan County stated, "'Peanut Land' development on Jaeun Island will be a crucial opportunity to regain its past reputation and secure new growth engines. We aim to create a successful tourism model that goes beyond a simple rural 체험 space, allowing visitors to enjoy the beautiful nature and unique culture while contributing to the revitalization of the local economy."

Beyond Reclaiming a 40-Year Legacy: Leaping Towards a Future-Oriented Tourist Island

The "Peanut Land" development project on Jaeun Island represents Sinan County's ambitious plan to not only reclaim its past glory as a national peanut hub but also to leap towards becoming a future-oriented tourist island. By combining its exceptional natural environment with the unique theme of "peanuts," "Peanut Land" is expected to offer new appeal to both domestic and international tourists, significantly contributing to the development of Sinan County's tourism industry.

Particularly, aligning with the increasing interest in island tourism, Jaeun Island, through "Peanut Land," is poised to become an attractive option for families, tourists seeking rural 체험 experiences, and those looking for unique souvenirs. Furthermore, "Peanut Land," operated with the active participation of local residents, is expected to present a sustainable tourism model and play a vital role in enhancing the vitality of the local community.

Sinan County plans to implement multifaceted promotional and marketing activities for the successful establishment of "Peanut Land" and to focus on expanding transportation infrastructure to improve accessibility. Through these efforts, the county aims to develop Jaeun Island into a leading tourist destination in the southwestern coast and contribute to improving the quality of life for local residents. The transformation of Jaeun Island is highly anticipated.
