Paraguay Small Online Stores Usher in Era of Simple Payments with QR Codes

Bancard, Paraguay's leading payment network, has announced the official support for QR code payments for online stores of all sizes using its online payment system, VPOS 2.0, starting this month.

This measure will allow online shoppers to easily complete payments by scanning QR codes from over 70 financial institution apps or by saving the image. Bancard explained the background of this full-scale adoption by citing the clear increase in sales of stores that activated the QR code payment system after its introduction.

According to Bancard, the QR code payment method had been piloted with some stores since last year, but at that time, it was limited to larger-scale stores that could invest time and resources in technology integration.

Bancard emphasized that the goal of this full-scale QR code payment adoption is to "provide a fast, simple, and secure payment experience," and predicted that through this, stores of all sizes will be able to "achieve effects such as increased sales, improved purchase experience, and reduced shopping cart abandonment rates by utilizing cutting-edge technology solutions similar to those of large online platforms."

In particular, they highlighted that the QR code payment function will be automatically activated for all online stores using the existing VPOS 2.0 system without any additional costs or complex setup.

Giuliano Galluppi, Bancard's Product and Experience Manager, stated, "We have seen a noticeable increase in sales in stores that have integrated QR codes as a payment method in online channels over the past few months," and analyzed that "this is because QR code payments are very simple and do not require entering credit card information each time."

He also added, "Paraguayan consumers already have a lot of payment experience through Bancard QR codes in offline channels, so they show high trust in online payments as well."

André Basso, Bancard's Digital Channels Specialist, emphasized, "Now, all online stores, regardless of size, can use the latest payment technology without the burden of additional development costs," and stressed, "Online sales have become a powerful tool for all types of businesses today, and this introduction of QR code payments will provide a very effective channel for growing and selling products through online platforms."

According to Bancard's own data, online sales through QR code payments increased by more than 500% in 2024 compared to 2023.

The introduction of the QR code payment function in the VPOS 2.0 system will be automatically applied to all sizes of online stores, and no separate adjustments or additional costs will be incurred.

Meanwhile, according to data from the Central Bank of Paraguay (BCP), the number of payments using QR codes in Paraguay reached 2,526,399 in the first quarter of 2025. This indicates that QR codes are a rapidly growing and important payment method in the Paraguayan payment market.

These factors combined are driving the rapid spread of QR code payments not only in online but also in offline stores in Paraguay, and they are expected to be utilized in even more diverse fields in the future. In particular, Bancard's full-scale introduction of QR code payments for online stores is expected to provide new growth momentum for small online businesses and significantly contribute to the revitalization of Paraguay's online commerce market.
