HARBIN, China – The 2025 Harbin Asian Winter Games, a grand winter sports festival for 470,000 Asians, came to a successful close on February 14th after eight days of fierce competition.

South Korea Achieves Best-Ever Gold Medal Count

South Korea's national team achieved its best-ever gold medal count in the Winter Asian Games, tying its record of 16 gold medals. The team also won 15 silver and 14 bronze medals, for a total of 45 medals. This impressive performance secured South Korea's position as the second-highest medal-winning country in the Games, following China.

Gyeonggi Province Athletes Shine

A significant contribution to South Korea's success came from athletes representing Gyeonggi Province. The 79 athletes from the province won 11 gold, 7 silver, and 9 bronze medals, demonstrating their exceptional skills and dedication.

Key Victories and Standout Athletes

Short Track Speed Skating: The "world's strongest" short track team dominated the competition, with Choi Min-jung achieving a historic triple crown, the first for a Korean woman in the Winter Asian Games. Kim Gil-li and Jang Sung-woo also delivered outstanding performances, winning multiple medals.
Speed Skating: Kim Min-sun, the "ice queen," added to her medal collection with 2 gold and 1 silver medals.
Figure Skating: Cha Jun-hwan and Kim Chae-yeon surprised many by defeating Japan's top figure skaters, Kagiyama Yuma and Sakamoto Kaori, in a thrilling upset.

Snowboarding: Young talents Lee Chae-woon and Kim Geon-hee made their mark with gold medal wins in slopestyle and halfpipe, respectively.
Curling: The women's curling team, composed of Gyeonggi Province athletes, won the gold medal after a hiatus of 18 years, marking a triumphant end to the Games for South Korea.

A Look Ahead: Neom City 2029

The next Winter Asian Games will be held in 2029 in Neom City, a futuristic megacity currently under construction in Saudi Arabia. This will be a historic event, as it will be the first time the Games are held in the Middle East.

The Harbin 2025 Asian Winter Games were a resounding success for South Korea, showcasing the country's athletic prowess and promising future in winter sports. The Games also highlighted the growing popularity of winter sports in Asia and the potential for future champions to emerge.
