Pop Star Dua Lipa Files $15 Million Lawsuit Against Samsung Electronics for Unauthorized Use of Image

LOS ANGELES – In a high-stakes legal battle between a music icon and a tech giant, British pop sensation Dua Lipa has filed a massive lawsuit against Samsung Electronics. The Grammy-winning artist is seeking $15 million (approximately 22 billion Korean won) in damages, alleging that the South Korean company used her likeness on its product packaging without permission or compensation.

According to a report by Variety on May 9th (local time), Dua Lipa’s legal team filed the complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. The lawsuit accuses Samsung of "widespread, continuous, and unlawful commercial exploitation" of the singer's "valuable image and likeness."

The Core of the Dispute

The litigation centers on the packaging for Samsung’s television sets. The complaint alleges that since last year, Samsung has featured a specific photograph of Dua Lipa on the exterior of its TV boxes as part of a global marketing strategy. The photograph in question was taken in 2024 during the Austin City Limits Music Festival, specifically in the backstage area.

Lipa’s attorneys assert that the artist holds the copyright to this specific image. They further claim that Samsung’s use of the photo constitutes a triple violation: copyright infringement, trademark infringement, and a violation of the "right of publicity"—the right of an individual to control the commercial use of their identity.

Allegations of Refusal and Unauthorized Marketing

A significant portion of the lawsuit highlights the alleged breakdown in communication between the two parties. Dua Lipa’s representatives stated that they had previously reached out to Samsung to demand the immediate cessation of the image’s use. However, the legal filing claims that Samsung ignored or refused these requests, continuing to ship products featuring the unauthorized imagery.

"Lipa's face was used extensively in a massive consumer goods marketing campaign without her consent, prior consultation, or any degree of control over how she was being portrayed," the lawsuit stated. "At no point did Ms. Lipa authorize this usage."

A High-Profile Clash

Dua Lipa is one of the most successful artists of the modern era. Since her 2015 debut with the single "New Love" and the subsequent success of her self-titled 2017 album, she has become a global household name. With three Grammy Awards and billions of streams to her name, her "brand value" is considered astronomical in the marketing world.

Legal experts suggest that this case could set a significant precedent for how multinational corporations handle the intellectual property of public figures. For a celebrity of Lipa’s stature, an endorsement deal for a brand like Samsung would typically command a fee in the tens of millions of dollars. By allegedly bypassing these channels, Samsung is being accused of gaining an unfair commercial advantage.

Samsung’s Response

As of the time of reporting, Samsung Electronics has not issued an official statement regarding the specific details of the litigation. However, the company is expected to face intense scrutiny as the case moves forward in the California court system.

Industry insiders are watching the case closely, noting that the outcome could have far-reaching implications for the tech industry's advertising practices and the protection of celebrity rights in a global marketplace. If the court finds in favor of Lipa, the $15 million demand could be just the beginning of the financial and reputational costs for the electronics giant.

About Dua Lipa Born in London, Dua Lipa rose to prominence as a leading figure in the disco-pop revival. Her hits like "New Rules," "Levitating," and "Don't Start Now" have dominated global charts. Beyond music, she is a fashion icon and an influential figure in digital culture, making the unauthorized use of her image a particularly sensitive issue for her brand management team.
