US-Vietnam Trade Agreement Reached: Vietnam Confirms Purchase of 50 Boeing Aircraft

The United States and Vietnam formally concluded a pivotal trade agreement on the 2nd (local time), opening a new chapter in economic cooperation between the two nations. This agreement is drawing attention for its inclusion of Vietnam's large-scale purchase of U.S. Boeing aircraft, the opening of agricultural markets, and mutual tariff reductions.

According to Politico, a U.S. political news outlet, a key element of this trade agreement is Vietnam's decision to purchase 50 aircraft from the U.S. Boeing Company. This is a significant deal, estimated to be worth approximately $8 billion to $10 billion, with Vietnam Airlines reportedly pursuing the introduction of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. Vietnam Airlines is seeking financing for this purchase through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for financial support with Citibank and the U.S. Export-Import Bank (US EXIM Bank). Vietnam Airlines decided on this investment as part of its 10-year aircraft development strategy to meet the rapidly increasing traffic demand in Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, and domestic markets, and to expand its network.

In the economic sector, the U.S. agreed to significantly reduce its mutual tariff on Vietnamese goods from 46% to 20%, while U.S. products can be exported to the Vietnamese market duty-free. This agreement was reached just before the expiration of a mutual tariff grace period that had been in effect since April, symbolizing progress in bilateral relations. Additionally, a 40% tariff was agreed upon for transshipped goods passing through third countries, which is seen as a measure to curb indirect exports from specific countries.

Politico also reported that the joint agreement includes provisions for Vietnam to provide "preferential market access" to the U.S. for agricultural products, including poultry, pork, and beef, as well as unspecified industrial goods. An existing MOU for the purchase of $2.9 billion worth of U.S. agricultural products is also set to be finalized through this agreement.

This trade negotiation was officially announced by President Donald Trump and holds significant meaning as it is the first mutual tariff-related trade agreement signed by the U.S. with an Indo-Pacific nation. It is expected to serve as an important benchmark for future trade negotiations with other Asian countries, including South Korea. Furthermore, the draft agreement did not include additional trade negotiation schedules or content related to China, which some hardliners had advocated for. This agreement aims to resolve the trade deficit between the two countries and strengthen economic ties, and it is expected to influence the international economic order.
