Palo Alto Networks Report Highlights Vulnerability of Chinese AI Model to "Jailbreaking"

A recent report by Palo Alto Networks, a leading cybersecurity firm in the United States, has revealed that DeepSeek, a Chinese AI model known for its cost-effectiveness and global popularity, is highly susceptible to "jailbreaking" attacks. This revelation has sparked concerns within the AI industry, with analysts suggesting that DeepSeek could become a ticking time bomb for cyberattacks.   

What is "Jailbreaking"?

Jailbreaking refers to a hacking technique that bypasses the security and ethical restrictions set by an AI system, allowing it to perform malicious tasks. This concept originated in the early 2000s with Unix, a server operating system. Initially, jailbreaking was primarily associated with activities like using unauthorized features on devices like Apple iPhones. However, with the rapid advancement of the AI industry, jailbreaking has evolved into a serious threat.   

The Growing Danger of AI Jailbreaking

The emergence of generative AI models like ChatGPT in 2022 has led to a surge in sophisticated jailbreaking attempts. Hackers are exploiting these vulnerabilities to extract harmful information, such as bomb-making instructions, hacking techniques, and methods for financial fraud. Unlike traditional hacking, AI jailbreaking often requires no specialized AI knowledge, making it accessible to a wider range of malicious actors.   

DeepSeek's Vulnerability and Its Implications

According to the Palo Alto Networks report, DeepSeek has the highest jailbreaking success rate (100%) among major AI models. While other models, such as Meta's Llama 3.1 (96%) and OpenAI's GPT-4o (86%), also exhibit vulnerabilities, DeepSeek's susceptibility is particularly alarming. As DeepSeek's user base grows, the potential for widespread disruption and misuse increases significantly.   

The Future of Cyberattacks: AI-Powered Agents and Physical AI

The threat of AI jailbreaking extends beyond information theft. Experts warn that state-sponsored hackers are already leveraging AI models like ChatGPT and Gemini to refine phishing techniques and develop malware. In the future, they may even create AI-based attack agents capable of autonomous malicious actions.   

Furthermore, the rise of "physical AI," which integrates AI with physical entities like humanoid robots, raises even greater concerns. Hackers could exploit jailbreaking techniques to control these robots, potentially causing physical harm to humans. Recent research by the University of Pennsylvania has demonstrated the feasibility of jailbreaking LLM-equipped robots, highlighting the potential for real-world dangers.   

The Need for Enhanced Cybersecurity in the AI Era

As the AI industry continues to advance, the importance of cybersecurity firms cannot be overstated. Countries like France and Germany are already strengthening their cybersecurity capabilities in response to these emerging threats. However, experts warn that South Korea lags behind in recognizing the urgency of this issue.
