SEOUL, South Korea – In a dazzling recognition of South Korea's surging influence on the global entertainment landscape, Maggie Kang, the visionary Korean-Canadian director behind the Netflix animated hit KPop Demon Hunters, has been awarded the prestigious Okgwan (Jade Crown) Order of Cultural Merit. The honor, the fourth-highest class of South Korea’s cultural decorations, was presented on December 10 at the 2025 Korea Content Awards ceremony, hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) and the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) at COEX in Seoul.

Director Kang was lauded for her significant contribution to the overseas expansion of K-Culture, K-pop, and related industries. Her animated film, a collaboration with Sony Pictures Animation, has been credited with not only becoming one of the most-watched titles in Netflix history but also for its groundbreaking approach. The movie, which follows a K-pop girl group (Huntr/x) secretly fighting demons disguised as a rival boy band (Saja Boys), uniquely blends the high-energy world of K-pop with traditional Korean shamanistic motifs and mythology, showcasing the vast potential of K-content in the animation genre. The film's immense success, including its soundtrack dominating pop charts and receiving Golden Globe nominations, underscores the global appetite for stories that creatively fuse Korean culture with universal themes.

A Night for Industry Titans

The 2025 Korea Content Awards celebrated 24 individuals and 15 outstanding works for their pivotal roles in developing the nation's content industry across four categories, including the newly established Content Industry Development Merit.

In addition to Director Kang’s top honor, several other key industry figures received major government commendations:

Cultural Commendations (Culture Merit Medal): The award for broadcasting and video industry development went to Kim Won-seok, director of the drama When Life Gives You Tangerines (also known as Pokssak Sogassuda in the original Korean), and screenwriter Park Ji-eun, known for the global sensation Queen of Tears.
Presidential Citations: This high recognition was given to six individuals across various fields:

Overseas Expansion: Park Young-seok, CEO of Pan Entertainment, and Yoon Hyun-jun, CEO of Studio Slam.
Broadcasting and Video Industry Development: Writer Mo Eun-seol of the Korea Broadcasting Writers Association (recognized for works like Culinary Class Wars).
Game Industry Development: Kim Hyeong-tae, CEO of Shift Up, and Park Jung-moo, Vice President of Nexon Korea.

Outstanding Works Cement Global Status

The ceremony also recognized 15 exceptional content works across three categories, with the top honors going to:

Presidential Award (Grand Prize):

Manhwa (Comic) Division: The webtoon Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint (Jeonjijeok Dokja Sijeom).
Animation Division: King of Kings.
Character Division: The character 'Dalnim-i'.

Future of K-Content

The widespread recognition across animation, drama, webtoons, and gaming at the 2025 Korea Content Awards reaffirms the content industry's critical role in South Korea's economy and cultural diplomacy. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has pledged continued, comprehensive support to ensure creators are empowered to take their work to the global stage.

As Director Kang's work with KPop Demon Hunters has vividly demonstrated, the fusion of traditional Korean storytelling and mythology with contemporary global genres like K-pop is creating unprecedented, worldwide commercial and cultural success, solidifying K-content as a true global powerhouse.
