WhatsApp Faces Controversy Over Non-Removable AI Feature Despite Claim of Being 'Optional'

Popular messaging app WhatsApp recently introduced an artificial intelligence (AI) feature activation button, claiming it is optional for users. However, controversy is brewing as this feature cannot be completely removed or hidden.

In an interview with local media on April 24th (local time), WhatsApp stated that while the newly added blue circular AI activation button on the chat screen cannot be deleted or hidden, its usage is "optional." Tapping this circular button activates a chat window with Meta's AI chatbot, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. This new feature has been implemented on both iPhone and Android versions, and WhatsApp's menu does not offer an option to deactivate it.

In response, WhatsApp defended the introduction of the feature, emphasizing that its use is entirely up to the individual. WhatsApp told Yahoo News, "The Meta AI feature is completely optional, and users can choose whether or not to use it. We believe providing this choice is positive and are always listening to user feedback."

Meta AI can also be activated in Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger messages, but unlike WhatsApp, it is located as an icon at the top of the search bar rather than a floating button in the center of the screen. When launching Meta AI in Europe last month, Meta explained, "Look for the new blue circle icon to see more and explore its potential." They also added, "Millions of people around the world are already interacting with Meta AI through direct messaging. They summon their AI assistant throughout the day to ask questions, delve deeper into topics they’re interested in, and get help with tutorials or problem-solving. Its easy accessibility makes it convenient to use anywhere, and it feels intuitive for people who use Meta apps."

Another way to activate the Meta chatbot is by using the tag '@meta AI' in other chat windows. Meta claims that its AI can only read messages directly shared with it and does not have access to other chat data.

However, users are expressing dissatisfaction with the unwanted AI feature button constantly being visible on their screens. Contrary to WhatsApp's claim of it being "optional," users are inevitably visually distracted by the feature even if they choose not to use it. Some point out that this causes inconvenience to the user interface (UI) and could raise concerns about privacy. In particular, there are worries about accidentally pressing the button or unintentionally interacting with the AI.

This controversy gains further attention in light of Meta's efforts to integrate AI features across its various platforms. While Meta aims to enhance user experience and introduce new ways of interaction through AI, users are wary of these changes being implemented in a way that infringes on their autonomy or forces unnecessary features upon them.

It remains to be seen whether WhatsApp will address user complaints by adjusting the visibility of the AI feature button or providing an option to hide it completely. This controversy raises an important question about how much technology companies should consider user choice and convenience when introducing new features.
