The Gyeonggi Provincial Museum is set to host a special humanities lecture series, the 'Museum University: Retrospect and Prospect of 80 Years of Korean Art,' commencing on May 3rd, 2025, in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of Korea's liberation.

The 'Museum University' is an educational program designed for adults, featuring lectures by experts in various fields on timely historical and cultural topics. This year's theme, 'Retrospect and Prospect of 80 Years of Korean Art,' will consist of a total of 14 sessions.

The lecture series will explore the evolution of Korean art across diverse genres, including Korean Painting, Abstract Painting, Figurative Painting, Performance Art, Socially Engaged Art, Sculpture, Media Art, and Art Criticism. By examining the intimate connection between art and its historical and social context, the program aims to provide a comprehensive reflection on Korean society as a whole.

Furthermore, by looking back at the 80-year history of Korean art and envisioning its future trajectory, the series intends to underscore the profound significance of the 80th anniversary of liberation. Spanning from the Japanese colonial era to Postmodernism, the lectures on specific artistic domains promise to illuminate the dynamic interplay between history and art, fostering a deeper understanding among participants.

A distinguished panel of 18 experts in relevant fields, including the renowned art critic Kim Joo-won, will lead the lectures, sharing their insights into various aspects of culture and art.

This significant educational endeavor is a collaborative effort with ART IN CULTURE, a leading Korean art journal. The two institutions formalized their partnership on April 16th through a memorandum of understanding concerning the program's operation. This collaboration will encompass all stages of the program, from planning and execution to promotion.

The 'Museum University' lectures will be held every first and third Saturday of the month, from May 3rd to November 22nd, 2025, between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM at the Museum Art Hall within the Gyeonggi Provincial Museum. Participation in the lecture series is free of charge.

Registration for the program can be completed online via the Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation website (members.ggcf.kr/) or offline through phone, in-person visits, and on-site registration. Detailed information regarding the program and registration procedures can be found on the Gyeonggi Provincial Museum's website (musenet.ggcf.kr).

Additional Information Gathered:

To further enrich the lecture series, the Gyeonggi Provincial Museum and ART IN CULTURE are expected to incorporate discussions on key historical events that significantly impacted the development of Korean art during the past 80 years. These events include the division of Korea, the Korean War, various socio-political movements, and the rapid economic and cultural changes the nation has undergone.

The lectures will likely delve into the works of prominent Korean artists from different periods and movements, analyzing their contributions and how their art reflected and shaped the socio-political landscape. Discussions on the evolution of artistic techniques, materials, and themes are also anticipated.

Furthermore, the "Prospect" aspect of the series will likely address contemporary trends in Korean art, including the impact of globalization, new media, and interdisciplinary approaches. Experts may offer their perspectives on the future direction of Korean art in the 21st century and its role in the global art scene.

The collaboration with ART IN CULTURE will likely provide participants with access to valuable resources such as articles, critiques, and interviews related to the lecture topics, further enhancing their learning experience. The journal's involvement also signifies a commitment to providing high-quality and insightful content.

The Gyeonggi Provincial Museum's initiative to offer this free, comprehensive lecture series underscores its dedication to public education and its role as a center for cultural enrichment. By focusing on the significant milestone of the 80th anniversary of Korean liberation through the lens of art history, the 'Museum University' promises to be a meaningful and enlightening experience for all participants.
